Ribosomes are tiny, non-membrane-bound organelles responsible for protein synthesis. They can be free in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).
- Composed of two subunits (large and small).
- Made of two-thirds rRNA and one-third protein.
- In prokaryotes: 70S ribosomes.
- In eukaryotes: 80S ribosomes.
- Site of protein synthesis essential for cell survival.
