Protons are subatomic particles found in the nucleus of every atom. They carry a positive electric charge and, together with neutrons, make up the atomic nucleus. The number of protons in the nucleus defines the atomic number and determines the chemical identity of the element.
- Charge: +1 elementary charge (positive).
- Location: Inside the atomic nucleus.
- Role: Determines the atomic number (Z) and thus the element.
- Mass: Roughly 1 atomic mass unit (similar to neutrons).
